EU Eyes Green Energy Hub at Trincomalee Port

Sri Lanka and the European Union have discussed plans to set up a green energy hub at Trincomalee Port, with both sides stressing the need for a feasibility study before the idea moves forward.

The proposal came up during talks on renewable energy and port development between an EU delegation, led by Asia-Pacific Director Peteris Ustubs, and Minister of Ports, Civil Aviation and Energy Anura Karunathilaka at the Ministry premises.

The EU delegation praised the Government’s initiatives in renewable energy generation and energy storage technologies, and expressed interest in exploring ways to support Sri Lanka’s transition to green energy. Minister Karunathilaka briefed the visitors on the renewable energy projects the Government is currently implementing.

On the Trincomalee proposal, the Minister underlined the importance of carrying out a feasibility study to assess the initiative before any decision is taken.

Port development was another major topic. Discussions covered the development of container terminals to boost the capacity and efficiency of the Port of Colombo. The two sides also explored potential EU support for port development projects under the EU’s Global Gateway programme.

Deputy Minister Janitha Ruwan Kodithukku and Ministry Secretary W.W.S. Mangala also took part in the discussions.
