Sri Lanka’s energy sector has reached a new milestone with the commissioning of one of the country’s pioneering utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Galle, a project part-financed by Pan Asia Bank.
The 10 MW/40 MWh facility was developed by Galilee BESS (Pvt.) Ltd, a subsidiary of WKV Hydro Technics (Pvt.) Ltd and Khen Energy Limited, Singapore. It was successfully commissioned recently and introduces utility-scale battery storage to Sri Lanka, adding an important new capability to the country’s energy infrastructure.
The project is a joint development combining local expertise with international collaboration.
Pan Asia Bank Director and CEO Naleen Edirisinghe said the bank was proud to have played a part. “Projects of this nature represent the kind of forward-looking investment that can contribute to the country’s evolving energy infrastructure,” he said. Describing Pan Asia Bank as The Truly Sri Lankan Bank, he added that it remains committed to supporting entrepreneurs and businesses investing in new solutions and creating long-term value. He also congratulated Galilee BESS, WKV Hydro Technics and Khen Energy on the achievement.
Assistant General Manager Branch Credit Amal Alles said the successful commissioning shows the potential of innovative energy projects in Sri Lanka. The bank, he said, was pleased to provide the financing support such an investment required and to work alongside the project partners.
The bank says its participation demonstrates the role financial institutions can play in enabling investment in emerging areas of the economy. As Sri Lanka continues to develop its energy sector and explore new technologies, access to appropriate financing will remain an important enabler of such projects.
For Pan Asia Bank, the project fits its commitment to investments that support long-term economic development. The bank has been sharpening its focus on sustainable and responsible financing, directing capital towards projects that can meet Sri Lanka’s future infrastructure and energy needs.
