Sri Lanka’s First Battery Energy Storage System Unveiled Today

A major milestone for Sri Lanka’s renewable energy journey happened today!

Sri Lanka’s first Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and the “Diyajanani” Dambulla floating solar power plant are scheduled to be inaugurated today (18), under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

This marks the country’s first-ever battery storage system — a key step toward a more stable national power grid.

The Battery Energy Storage System was built to enhance Sri Lanka’s renewable energy capacity and improve grid stability.

Constructed in Anuradhapura, the system has a capacity of 10 megawatts.

Alongside it, under the government’s national renewable energy programme, the “Diyajanani” floating solar power system — built on Ibbankatuwa Wewa in Dambulla — inaugurated by the President this afternoon.

The Diyajanani solar power plant will add 5 megawatts of capacity to the national grid and is expected to supply electricity to approximately 10,000 households.
